ABSTRACT

Many children diagnosed with autism experience speech and language delays, impairments in speech sound acquisition, and difficulty emitting verbal responses, that may interfere with later acquisition of vocal verbal behavior (Esch, Carr & Michael, 2005; National Research Council 2001; Schreibman, L. E. & Stahmer, A. C., 2014; & Whitehurst, Smith, Fischel, Armold & Lonigan, 1991). The main focus of many early intensive behavior intervention programs is to increase and improve speech production in children with autism and other developmental disabilities as it promotes language skill development. Specifically, early implementation of effective teaching procedures is critical to promote early, frequent, varied and generalized vocal verbal repertoires. An understanding of the structure and function of speech development and production, as well as effective strategies that facilitate speech production and accuracy, will enhance the selection and implementation of appropriate target selections in support of effective intervention programming.

Behavior analysts are ethically bound to seek consultations and cooperate with other professionals to effectively and appropriately serve their clients. Behavior analysts and speech-language pathologists should work together as part of an interdisciplinary team, especially when addressing speech and language skill acquisition programs. Effective collaborative practices are needed to help build partnerships and facilitate conversations that will benefit the learner’s outcome. Gaining and applying effective collaborative skill competencies will foster building positive therapeutic relationships that will enhance understanding and respect of the value that each discipline brings, facilitate joint problem solving, and draw from the expertise of each discipline, with a shared goal for better learner outcome. This webinar will (1) present a brief introduction of the necessary structures and functions for speech production and why they are important considerations; (2) discuss effective strategies that facilitate speech production and accuracy, drawing from both ABA and SLP professions; and (3) highlight the importance for effective interprofessional collaborative and culturally sensitive practices.

Target Audience: Professionals for whom the topic is within their scope of practice. We welcome students and others who are also interested in the topic to join us.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the necessary structures for speech sound production
  • Identify at least two effective prompting strategies that promote speech sound accuracy and production
  • Identify three reasons in support of interprofessional collaboration when working on speech sound repertoires

PRESENTER BIO

Dr. Lina Slim, is a dually certified SLP & BCBA-D with over 30 years experience, specializing in the diagnosis and management of children with autism, neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders, and apraxia. She is Founding Executive Director of ASAP – A Step Ahead Program, LLC, since 2004. Dr. Slim is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP), ABA Online Program, and Endicott College ABA Master’s Program. Dr. Slim’s clinical and research interests focus on disseminating best practices in the application of the science of behavior analysis, training staff to gain competencies in the application of behavior learning principles, empowering families with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for implementation of best practices for their children and promoting a culture that embraces interprofessional education and collaborative practice with a family centered approach. Dr. Slim presents and consults nationally and internationally in the areas of autism, apraxia, speech-language assessment and interventions, evidence-based practices, parent and staff training, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice, and has published peer-reviewed research. Dr. Slim is the recipient of the 2005 Children Empowerment Award, the 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 ASHA ACE award. and the 2014 New Jersey Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NJSHA) Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award. She is Chair of NJSHA Interprofessional Autism Conference (IPAC), Board of Directors Member of the Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT), Co-Chair of the NJSHA-NJABA Collaborative Practice Group, Chief Communication Officer Liaison to ABAI Behavior Analysis SIG on Supervision (BASIGS) to the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), Member of ABAC, LLC, Internal Continuing Education Committee (ICEC), Executive Member of the Speech Pathology and Applied Behavior Analysis (SPABA) ABAI SIG and the BACB Subject Matter Expert on the Item Review Committee. Dr. Slim is an ABAI approved coordinator for the Versified Course Sequence (VCS) for the BCBA certificate, at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), Child and Youth Psychiatry – Mental Health Training Institute. Dr. Slim is a full member of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), NJSHA, Morris County Speech and Hearing Association (MCSHA), Union County Speech and Hearing Association (UCSHA), NJABA, ABAI, and the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts (APBA).
