    It is common for individuals with autism to display fearful behavior when they need to undergo medical exams and treatment. Unfortunately, this can result in difficulty in diagnosing illnesses, delays in receiving treatment, and the avoidance of necessary medical intervention. During this workshop, Dr. White will discuss how to use systematic desensitization and other treatments to teach learners to cooperate with a range of medical procedures including physicals, dental checkups, basic first aid, and blood draws. Procedures will also be described to facilitate generalization across settings and healthcare providers, including parents and caregivers. There will also be a discussion of how to collaborate with medical professionals to help them learn to become optimal providers for their patients with autism. Dr. White will also include a description of Alpine Learning Group’s unique partnership with a dental hygienist training program.


    Learning Objectives

    Presenter Bio and Disclosure Statement

    Dr. Erin Richard White has specialized in working with adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders in employment, educational, community and home settings for close to two decades. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and holds both teacher of the handicapped and elementary teacher certifications in New Jersey. Dr. White completed her doctorate and master's degree in applied behavior analysis from Caldwell University. She has published articles in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and Behavior Analysis in Practice. She regularly serves as a guest reviewer of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. Dr. White has presented at many local and national conferences on a variety of topics including preparing learners for adulthood, assessing and reducing problem behavior, and ethics.  She currently serves as the Continuing Education Chair for the New Jersey Association for Behavior Analysis, Inc.
