Discrete trial instruction (DTI; Smith, 2001) has been widely used to teach a variety of skills to individuals with autism spectrum disorder. One modification of DTI, referred to as instructive feedback, involves incorporating secondary targets into learning trials. These secondary targets are presented in the absence of direct teaching (i.e., prompts, reinforcement, error correction). This modification of DTI has been found to increase instructional efficiency because individuals learn additional targets without requiring additional training time. The current webinar will provide an introduction to and examples of instructive feedback, a review of recent research on instructive feedback, and recommendations for clinical application and future research.

After attending this webinar participants should be able to:

1) Describe a variety of possible ways to incorporate secondary targets into learning trials
2) Use instructive feedback in clinical practice
3) Assess effectiveness and efficiency of instructive feedback in clinical practice through appropriate data collection
4) Discuss previous research on instructive feedback

Presenter Bio and Disclosure Statement

Casey L. Nottingham is a board certified behavior analyst and previously served as a Clinical Supervisor for Alpine Learning Group’s Outreach Department in Paramus, NJ. She holds a M.A. and
Ph.D. in Applied Behavior Analysis from Caldwell University in Caldwell, NJ. Casey is currently serving as the Clinical Director for a behavior analytic agency in New Jersey and as an instructor of special education in Ball State University’s online program. Casey’s current research interests
include increasing instructional efficiency, staff and caregiver training, increasing health and physical fitness-related behaviors, and increasing behaviors related to environmental sustainability. Casey’s
clinical interests include providing comprehensive, in-home behavior analytic services to toddlers and young children and their caregivers, providing training and supervision to staff members working with young children and caregivers, and providing training and guidance related to research- and
ethics-related areas within the field of applied behavior analysis. She has published her work in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and Learning and Motivation and presented at national and local conferences. Casey is a member of the Association for Behavior Analysis International and The
New Jersey Association for Behavior Analysis.
