PART 1: Staff Assessment and Training Guidelines in Intensive Behavioral Settings for Adults with Autism and Other Intellectual Disabilities 

ABSTRACT

This training will cover a multitude of issues related to the training and retention of direct support staff who work with adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. The scope of the training will cover trauma histories as they relate to staff, the diagnosis and amelioration of trauma based issues, and the incorporation of wellness programs for staff. The influence of burnout as it applies to working with this population will also be addressed along with a host of strategies targeting staff wellness, data collection, interaction styles and resiliency measures to address these issues.

Target Audience: Professionals for whom the topic is within their scope of practice. We welcome students and others who are also interested in the topic to join us.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this event:

    1. Participants will select different measures that assess the extent to which direct care staff are utilized in settings that serve adults with ID.
    2. Participants will identify the role of trauma as it relates to both the people whom we serve and the staff who work with them.
    3. Participants will match proactive ways to evaluate staff in terms of their learning history working with clients with extreme aggression.
    4. Participants will identify strategies that promote the wellness and care of individuals with significant aggressive behavior and the staff who serve them.

PART 2: Comprehensive Assessment Protocols for Use in Environments Addressing Severe Problem Behavior in Adults with Autism and Other Intellectual Disabilities

ABSTRACT

This training will cover comprehensive assessment protocols as they apply to serving adults with autism and other intellectual disabilities (ID). The information will go beyond basic functional assessment tools and methodology to cover environmental assessment measures as well as the ability of the person with ID to fully pursue the values and goals that they have set for themselves. A fully operationalized set of what we call “measures of wellbeing” will be reviewed along with their impact on those whom we serve. The ability of these measures of wellbeing to ameliorate severe aggressive behavior will also be covered. A complete assessment and intervention tool for working with adults with ASD and other intellectual disabilities and severe aggressive behavior will also be covered.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this event:

    1. Participants will identify the design of environmental assessments in residential settings in which there are clients who display severe aggression.
    2. Participants will select how to better quantify aggressive behavior in terms of its impact on the environment.
    3. Participants will be able to select the specific aspects of operationally defined self-esteem behaviors and will choose the best options for individuals in different settings.
    4. Participants will identify the nature of and the need for more in depth functional assessment as it relates to severe aggressive behavior.

PRESENTER BIO

Dr. Guercio has spent much of his career researching effective staff training protocols and behavior intervention strategies for staff and clients in settings where severe aggression is present. Since obtaining his master’s and doctoral degrees in behavior analysis and therapy from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Dr. Guercio has worked in settings serving as Director of Behavioral Services for the Missouri Department of Mental Health, and as Vice President of Clinical Services and Research at the Judevine Center for Autism/TouchPoint Autism Services in St. Louis. He also serves as adjunct faculty in the behavior analysis department at Washington University, St. Louis University and Central Missouri University. He has given more than 500 presentations at behavioral conferences and authored and/or co-authored over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals as well as written several book chapters related to the treatment of intensive behavioral issues. He has authored or co-authored 2 books; Assessment of Adult Core Competencies: Teaching Skills to Adults with Autism and Severe Behavioral Challenges; and Behavioral Relaxation Training Clinical Applications with Diverse Populations. Dr. Guercio serves on the Board of Editors of Behavior Analysis Research and Practice and is a guest reviewer for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. In his career, Dr. Guercio has helped design and run a program for individuals with sexually deviant behavior and substance abuse issues and has developed an entire treatment protocol based upon that program. In his current role at Benchmark Human Services, Dr. Guercio serves as the Clinical Director. He develops and delivers behavioral services for clients with significant aggression and high risk behavioral needs, many of whom have been institutionalized for more than 15 years, often under restraints and heavy medication. Through Dr. Guercio’s leadership, many clients’ medication dosages have decreased and they have developed positive compensatory behaviors and are being integrated into the community. Dr. Guercio currently serves on the ABAI Licensing Committee and is a board member of the Missouri Association for Behavior Analysis.

If the abovementioned continuing education credit requirements are not met, participants will not receive continuing education credit. Partial credit will not be awarded. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS

Certificate of attendance are offered to those who do not need or require continuing education credit. For those attending the live event, selecting "other" as a professional designation will produce a certificate of attendance for professional development or internal organization training purposes.

We are now offering a specially priced option for individuals only seeking a certificate of attendance. This option gives access to the recording of the live event only.  Those who sign up for this option can access the recording the day after the live event and have two-weeks to view the recording and verify their attendance. No post-test is required for this option. Once attendance is verified, attendees must fill out a confidential evaluation before a certificate will be granted.
