Abstract

In this two-part workshop, co-authors Dr. Keith Williams and Dr. Laura Seiverling will provide an overview of the selective eating interventions in their new book, Broccoli Boot Camp:  Basic Training for Parents of Selective Eaters. They will describe a range of step-by-step interventions for expanding a child’s diet variety, provide case examples, and discuss ways to modify protocols in order to meet the needs of individual children and their families.  Additional topics include defining the term selective eating, repeated taste exposure, “mealtime battles,” autism spectrum disorder and selective eating, and making adaptations to interventions for children who are overweight and underweight. Lastly, they will discuss and provide ways to respond to common parent concerns and issues faced by therapists. 

Learning Objectives

Part 1 -Attendees will identify:
1. Various factors associated with selective eating in children.
2. A range of behavioral interventions that can be implemented by clinicians and families to expand a child’s diet variety.
3. How to collect data in order to track a child’s progress when using the interventions discussed.

Part 2 -Attendees will identify:
1. How to modify interventions in order to meet the needs of a particular child or family.  
2. Hierarchical interventions and why sometimes they are unsuccessful.
3. How sensory issues may be related to feeding problems and how sensory issues can be taken into account when developing behavioral interventions."

Presenter Bio and Disclosure Statement

Dr. Laura Seiverling is a licensed psychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). She worked for five years at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children’s Center for Pediatric Feeding Disorders in Bayside, New York, serving as both psychologist and clinical supervisor for the program. She now holds an Assistant Teaching Professor position at Ball State University. Dr. Seiverling has over ten years of experience providing treatment for feeding as well as other behaviors in children. She has published more than thirty articles and book chapters in the areas of feeding problems, autism spectrum disorder, staff and parent training, and behavioral interventions.

Dr. Keith Williams is a licensed psychologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). He has been the Director of the Feeding Program at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center for twenty years. Dr. Williams is a Professor of Pediatrics at the Penn State College of Medicine, where he teaches medical students, graduate students, and medical residents. He has written more than sixty book chapters and articles in the area of feeding problems and child nutrition. He is coauthor of Treating Eating Problems of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Developmental Disabilities: Interventions for Professionals and Parents. 

Dr. Keith Williams and Dr. Laura Seiverling receive royalties from the book, Broccoli Boot Camp:  Basic Training for Parents of Selective Eaters, which will be mentioned throughout the presentation.
