Course Overview

Behavioral and mental health practitioners, special education teachers, SLPs and child study team members often work with individuals with severe behavior problems such as aggression, tantrums, self-injury, pica and rumination. Although graduate classes provide some basic training, application to practice is challenging, even for experienced practitioners. The purpose of this webinar series is to provide advanced instruction and problem solving in developing, writing and using Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) and solving common challenges in implementation. The materials will be delivered by both lecture-type presentations and interactive on-line exercises. We encourage individuals to attend all sessions live so they can contribute throughout the series during the live discussions by commenting, sharing, and/or asking questions and receive feedback on their own performance in on-line exercises. The presenter will provide instruction on how to frame questions asked during this event in a confidential way and all questions will be entered in an anonymous chat box to provide an additional layer of privacy.

Title: Webinar #1--Workload Management, Ethics and Professional Standards for FBAs and BSPs

Abstract

Professionals often have trouble making priorities due to large workloads, requests to respond to real and not so real emergencies, and attend poorly run or non-functional meetings. During the first session in this series, Professor Sturmey will review IDEA regulations for FBAs and BIPs, restrictive practices and safety. Participants will privately review their own workloads to identify what can be given lower priority, determine which cases could be reassigned and how to work with a supervisor create a priority caseload, and have the opportunity to ask questions. Finally, Professor Sturmey will focus on the Ethics of treating, delaying treatment, or not treating client behavior with an emphasis on consent, incremental assessment validity and prompt service delivery.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session participants will to:
1. Identify the impact of caseload size on service delivery.
2. Identify priority cases caseload (Attendees will be encouraged to discuss their caseload priority list with their supervisor)
3. Identify the ethical concerns related to caseload size, consent, incremental assessment, and timing of service delivery.

Abstract

Professor Sturmey begins this session with a brief review of session one which will lead into a review of professional guidelines and/or standards, IDEA, and local, state, and agency requirements for FBAs, including when to do them and what should go into them.
As part of this session, Professor Sturmey will review assessment procedures including Interviews, ABCs, questionnaire, brief FAs, and trial-based FAs for high frequency behavior, and how to identify functions of low frequency target behavior and when an inpatient hospital or clinic-based assessment may be required or preferred.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session participants should be able to:
1. Identify what to do when you cannot observe the target behavior.
2. Distinguish escape from attention.
3. Find and select replacement behaviors.
4. Apply Floyd and Farmer criteria to bad and good examples of FBAs.
5. Score bad examples of FBAs and rewrite insufficient pieces from examples.

Title: Webinar #4--Training Caregivers To Implement FBAs and BSPs

Abstract

Teaching and supporting caregivers, such as family members, classroom and residential staff, is essential for the successful implementation of effective BSPs. In addition, well-trained caregivers can also participate in collecting data for functional assessments and analyses. Unfortunately, many caregivers do not possess these skills and so practitioners must train them to do so. Caregiver training using information, lectures and written materials is widely recognized as an ineffective practice. Evidence-based practices include behavioral skills training (BST) and some abbreviated forms of BST such as modeling, video modeling, and computer based instruction, if they are well evaluated.
This webinar will identify the general strategies practitioners should use to teach caregivers and common specific skills that practitioners should teach to caregivers including: data collection, collecting ABC data, conducting trial-based functional analysis, functional analysis, preventive strategies, and BSP implementation.

 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session participants will identify:
1. The skills that many caregivers need to successfully implement functional assessments, functional analyses and BSPs.
2. General strategies of staff training using BST.
3. How to design role plays effectively based on general case training.
4. Applications to data collection, collecting ABC data, conducting trial-based functional analysis, functional analysis, preventive strategies, and BSP implementation.

Presenter Bio and Disclosure Statement

Professor Peter Sturmey is Professor of Psychology at The Graduate Center and the Department of Psychology, Queens College, City University of New York where he is a member of the Behavior Analysis Doctoral and Masters in Applied Behavior Analysis programs. He specialized in autism and other developmental disabilities, especially in the areas of applied behavior analysis, dual diagnosis, evidence-based practice, and staff and parent training. He is the resident speaker at ABAC and Chief Scientific Officer at Long Island ABA.

He gained his PhD at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom and subsequently taught at the University of the South West (Plymouth) and University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He then worked for the Texas Department of Mental Retardation from 1990-2000 as Chief Psychologist, first at Abilene then San Antonio State Schools during a Federal class action lawsuit. There he supervised behavioral services and master's level psychologists, providing behavior support plans for severe behavioral and psychiatric disorders in adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities, and implementing large-scale active treatment and restraint reduction programs.

Professor Sturmey has published 25 edited and authored books, over 210 peer reviewed papers, and over 60 book chapters. He provides webinars on ABA to qualified professionals and others on a regular basis. He has made numerous presentations nationally and internationally, including recent presentations in Canada, Brazil, Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy. He has an active lab of graduate and undergraduate students working on developing and evaluating effective and efficient ways of training caregivers using modeling and feedback to use applied behavior analysis with children and adults with autism and other disabilities. He provides training and consultations widely.
