Sleep problems are ubiquitous among children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. If left untreated, these sleep problems are likely to persist, resulting in adverse secondary effects on the daytime functioning and wellbeing of people with developmental disabilities and their families. Sleep problems in children with ASD are underpinned by a combination of biopsychosocial etiologies and there is evidence to support the use of both pharmacological and behavioral approaches. This webinar will focus on evidence-based approaches to the assessment and treatment of sleep problems in children and adolescents with developmental disabilities.
In this webinar Dr. McLay will focus explicitly on unique bio-behavioral factors that may contribute toward sleep problems in adolescents with developmental disabilities. In particular, the presentation will focus on the use of adolescent-led behaviourally-based assessment and treatment processes within the context of sleep treatment. Data will also be presented on the secondary impact of sleep problems and collateral benefit of improved sleep for both children and their families. Case illustrations and current data will be included throughout.
After attending participants should be able to identify:
1) unique bio-behavioral factors that impact adolescent sleep.
2) adolescent-informed assessment strategies appropriate for use within the sleep context.
3) adolescent-led intervention strategies appropriate for use within the sleep context, and apply these to case studies presented.
Presenter Bio and Disclosure Statement
Laurie McLay is an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand). Dr. McLay has over 15 years of experience working with children with developmental disabilities and their families in New Zealand, Australia, and the U.S. She has conducted research into preference-enhanced communication systems, the effectiveness of video self-modelling, and Functional Behavioural Assessment. Most recently, her research has focused on behaviorally-based assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and sleep problems. Dr. McLay has received two major research grants to support this ongoing work and published over 25 journal articles and book chapters. She has also presented at a number of national and international conferences.
